Derry City and Strabane District Council procured this contract in 2017. Upon successful appointment of the contract, Hawthorn Heights carried out all works as main contractor. The project consisted of the replacement of an existing synthetic pitch and adjoining natural grass pitch with a new 3G surface sports pitch. This included all associated complex civil engineering works. Allowing for one large full sized Rugby and GAA sports pitch. It can also be used as two smaller soccer pitches with the internal dividing net. The scheme included a range of complex civil engineering works and strict environmental measures had to be put in place and adhered to in the prevention of contamination to the adjacent River Mourne. Hawthorn Heights organised and coordinated the design and installation of the pitch floodlighting to meet planning requirements.
The Sports Pitch has proved to be a great success hosting numerous matches from across GAA, Rugby and Soccer. The project was carried out to the highest standards of quality and health and safety, becoming a huge asset to the local community. The new 3G pitch measured 137m x 96m. This consisted of over 13,000m2 of pre-fabricated shock pad and 60mm 3G Carpet meeting the testing requirements for Rugby, GAA and Soccer.
Local clubs are now in a position to play their particular sports at professional levels. Project has received fantastic reviews and Hawthorn Heights are proud to have been part of such an iconic sports project.
